What is LINKA?

LINKA is a company selling smart bike locks to keen cyclists. The component locks around the wheel, preventing the wheel from turning. One of the best features of LINKA is that the lock stays on the bike, so you don’t have to bother about carrying it, taking it off and even losing it.

Also, this lock stays in place and allows you to lock and unlock your bike from a distance, all done via Bluetooth and a phone app.

It’s so quick to lock your bike and you don’t even have to carry a key with you! As the LINKA Lock website shares, Mo, the designer, sat at a museum and timed cyclists, disovering it takes an average of 150 seconds to lock a bike.

That’s a lot of time one can save each week, especially if you’re a regular cyclist.

Who Invented LINKA?

Mo—Mohammed Mohammed—is the guy behind LINKA. Mo loved cycling on his bike in Queens where he grew up, but he didn’t appreciate how many times his or his friends’ bikes were stolen. Being a mechanical engineer, he could do something about it.

After interviewing fellow cyclists, he designed the LINKA, shared it with the world at Bike Expo New York in 2015 and also started a Kickstarter campaign to launch its production.

A great motivation behind the product is the need for less congested cities. Rather than cars, the more happy cyclists there are in the roads, the better for the environment.

Cool LINKA Features

Mohammed went all out in developing a smart product.

Apart from locking and unlocking, the LINKA app can also advise you on safer places to park your bike. If the bike is picked up to be stolen, a loud alarm will sound.

Shark Tank Appearance – What Happened?

Mo looked for more support for his company from the Shark Tank crew, offering 10% for a $250 000 investment. He could boast of the Kickstarter project that made him almost $130 000 and he already had $40 000 in sales.

As Gazette Review reports, the sharks—Robert Herjavec specifically—simulated stealing the bike and saw how the alarm was triggered. However, the sharks thought it lacked a primary feature: a chain. They didn’t think enough cyclists would trust the simple locking mechanism.

Also, it may be difficult to beat the competition in the current market.

In the end, no shark wanted to chance being an investor.

Taking the Sharks’ Advice

Mo did take some pointers from the sharks and he’s been doing well since the episode. As Shark Tank Tales says, he’s still in business and the brand also continued development.

So, today you can purchase a range of LINKA products, from LINKA chains to bike mounts and smart fobs. A traditional LINKA sells for $139.

Mo took a simple idea and with how the company has been growing and how customers review them, it seems he found a winner—despite what the sharks thought.
